I wouldn't suggest repowering with a new engine because they cost so much. Others may be perfectly good for 20 more years. If the original Volvo engine is still there, some of them are beyond rebuilding by now, due to raw salt water eating the block for too long. Albin was and is a good shop, they designed that boat inboard only-for a reason. But if you really want to go sailing and cruising on the boat? Keep it inboard. If you only wanted the engine to get in and out of your marina.sure. With the more central weight and ballast of the inboard engine replaced by the extreme outboard location of the outboard engine, you are going to pitch and hobbyhorse way more and motoring in rough wx, even with the long shaft engine, may be impossible. Second, with a 27' boat you still will be very much subject to wave motion in rough wx and "small craft warnings" are fairly common wx in most places. The extra money you spend for one now, with an inboard engine, will mainly come back to you when you sell it. There are two other aspects to inboard/outboard.įirst, sooner or later you may sell the boat.
#INBOARD VS OUTBOARD BOAT FULL#
I had a 25hp longshaft on my 11' Whaler for a couple of years - It's not ideal, because the extra shaft length will slow you down, but it does set up one hellva-cool rooster-tail (at full speed mine was a good 15' high! - The harbour police will see you speeding from a mile away so make sure you have a good story ready!

swinging a normal sized prop) You CAN put it on a dinghy. You can add a solar panel if you need the extra juice.Īnd if you get a Longshaft without the high-thrust option (i.e. Did I mention I got it used for 600 bucks? If it really craps out, and can't be fixed, I can replace it - In fact, I could keep replacing outboards close to TEN times to equal the same cost as a diesel overhaul! I think if you are really on a budget then outboards are the way to go. VERY quiet - I'm planning the same kind of ICW trip you speak of and am happy that I will not hear a diesel engine the whole way down! Since it is High-thrust, the prop is larger and has more bottom end-torque, hence, when I put it on my 11' Whaler, it wouldn't get it to plane.

I have a 1994 9.9hp High-Thrust Extra-Longshaft with High output alternator (I think 15 amps) on my Bayfield 25.
